I am a speech therapist, in a brand new, low income, high need, special education school. My students are all adorable, friendly kindergarteners, who are 5 and 6 yr olds, who have autism or other significant disabilities. Many of them are nonverbal or minimally verbal, and would benefit from toys and activities to promote their language production, comprehension, and play skills. My students struggle to engage with peers appropriately, play with toys in a functional manner, and use language for a variety of purposes (to ask questions, to ask for help, to comment on what they see, to state their names, etc.) They often show their intelligence through music (signing along to wheels on the bus, dancing to the beat during freeze dance) and art (drawing pictures of classmates, matching colors and items).
