Understanding general directions like North or South is great general information. When navigating in our world it often requires more understanding of our position on the earth. "Meet me on the South-West corner of 53rd street" does no good if you can not understand where South or where West is relative to your position. I am using Geocaching as a way to begin to understand headings and coordinates on a map. Students may not think they have a use for maps because they are generally available on our phones. I want my students to be able to find themselves if ever in a situation where they are lost. Using GPS in our school yard to search for hidden caches placed by me or my students will give students the skills necessary to navigate their way around the globe.
