Active, choice, recreational reading creates a life-long commitment to both literacy and learning. My 114 10th grade honors students attend a charter high school, over 55% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches, and the honors/AP courses reach out to students from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In our school's make-up, 2nd language learners from Africa, the Middle East, Mexico, and Vietnam are challenging themselves to be the strongest and best learners, for all see the need to attend college. Reading non-fiction texts that demonstrate how individuals have met challenges will provide strong examples of role models who persevere under dire conditions. Hope must always be a part of life; students must hope and desire to make the best of their lives.
