Students learn best by practicing skills in different ways. In my first grade classroom, we practice our sight words and spelling patterns with many different hands on materials during our daily word work stations. This allows students to explore and engage in their learning, rather than just memorizing and completing paper and pencils tasks with our weekly words. My students will use the magnetic letters and wiki sticks as manipulatives during our daily word work stations. The magnetic letters are color coded to make it easy to distinguish between vowels and consonants and the storage container makes it easy to keep letters organized and allow students to spend their time building words rather than searching for the letters they need. The wiki sticks are also so versatile that they can easily be used to build shapes during math stations and allow students to be creative and make artwork during indoor recess and choice time.
