Flexible seating in the classroom allows students the mobility they need to choose a workspace best suited for their needs and learning style. I have varied styles and developmental levels in my room so offering a carpet space to work during whole group, small group, and independent work times is crucial. We especially work in multiple areas around the room during our math and reading interventions. This carpet allows for my special education and highly active students to visualize where their space is while allowing them to have movement in that space when and if necessary. Students often partner or small group read around the room and the carpet is an area that would allow many students to be working there comfortably. Creating choices of seating options in the classroom creates an ownership to student's own learning. This carpet is the first step in offering more flexible seating choices to my 1st grade students.
