My students attend high school in rural Appalachia. They come from very low to no income families. Many of my students come to school hungry. Some do not have electricity or running water. Others do not have a permanent home. These students have families that are known as rent hoppers- when the rent is due, they pack their garbage bag full of belongings and leave. Parents have a string of boyfriends/girlfriends. The only stable life these students have is at school. Sadly, most of these students have a parent who has been arrested for drug related incidents. My students are moderately mentally impaired to severely mentally impaired, which means they have an IQ of approximately 60-35. These students will never be able to live alone and need appropriate life skills. My health class will teach a variety of skills: social health (playing games with different students in the class); mental health (studying a variety of age/level appropriate topics); and physical health (getting exercise).
