My students are focused, dedicated, and driven. Their aspirations include college and careers. In order for them to reach their goals they need to develop critical academic language. Many of my students are learning English as their second language and all of them are learning academic language. Each student is fluent in conversational language but most lack the necessary academic language. Academic language is essential for each student to comprehend and express ideas. My students attend an urban public school that is structured in Small Learning Communities for a more individualized and personalized high school experience. The students represent a variety of cultural heritages, predominantly Latino and Filipino. They face a variety of challenges in their daily lives. Easy access to a quality dictionary in their classroom would remove one challenge from their lives.
