By and large, my special education students are elementary school kids who have challenges. Some have difficulty in fourth and fifth grade decoding words, many have difficulty with the basics of math - number sense and operations. They are getting ready to move to middle school which will require changing classes, keeping track of their materials, and multiple types of homework. Many of these kids are functioning more like lower elementary with their academic and emotional skills. We are trying like mad to help them with reading strategies as well as math strategies because things are only going to get more complicated when they move on from my school. This is my first year teaching and I have bought so many essential things for my class already. I want my students to come into this classroom and feel safe. If they feel safe, they may be free to take academic risks. We do a lot of work on social-emotional skill building, which is something they desperately need.
