As an alumnus of the high school where I teach, my time both as a student and as a teacher has allowed me to be a first-hand observer of the school's environment for over two decades. In this time, I have witnessed both gradual and rapid changes to the surrounding community, and its effect on the overall school climate. My school ranks among some of the most ethnically diverse educational institutions in the entire country, and while this presents both wonderful opportunities as well as notable challenges, the teachers' collective approach toward education at my school has remained consistent since my time as a student. My exposure to this culture of education has no doubt shaped my teaching pedagogy, as have recent developments in technology and neuroscience. My primary initiative as a classroom teacher, regardless of subject matter, is to teach and promote the ability for students to think critically.
