My students attend a school in heart of the Mississippi delta, in one of the poorest counties in America. They have grown up in an environment where education has taken a backseat, as legislators have constantly underfunded public schools, failing to provide my students with the materials that they deserve. Each day, my students walk past broken water fountains, sit in classrooms with leaking ceilings, and attempt to do research on computers that regularly lack Internet. Each day in my class, my students hopefully ask if we will be in the lab. Each day, I sadly explain that we do not have a working tri-beam balance, nor test-tubes, nor chemicals to work with, and that our lab is currently being used as a temporary storage room. As a title one district, we rarely receive the funding that is necessary to provide even an adequate education for attendees of our high school. My students deserve BETTER than this. If they are to be prepared for college, they MUST have resources to do so.
