The viola is a mid-range instrument, filling in the notes between the upper violins and the lower-range cellos and basses. Out of the 25 string players in the program, we only have two violas. This causes the orchestra to be out of balance--too much high sound and not enough in the mid-range. There are several students still waiting for a string instrument that would happily take on this responsibility if a viola were available to them. They will use it to play during lessons and orchestra during the school day, and for extended practice at home. Your donation towards a new viola will not just help my students now; it will continue to help future generations of students through whose hands this viola will pass. My students need this opportunity because it gives them a collective voice and a means to express themselves through music. Studying an instrument also fosters responsibility, dedication, teamwork, and good study habits that cross over into their other subjects.
