My school is transitioning from a traditional neighborhood school to a school that personalizes learning for all students. This year a colleague of mine and I will be working together to create personalized learning opportunities based off of individual students needs for 60 plus first and second graders in a blended classroom. We asked students what would help them be successful. They described having items such as lounge chairs, bean bags, cozy seating, big pillows, bright colorful furniture to be part of the space. By having flexible seating such as the wobble chairs, cushions, pillows, stacking stools, soft seats, floor cushions, and runtz chairs, students are free to make choices about where they want to sit to learn. My colleague and I listened to their voices and now I want to make these comfy personalized learning spaces come to life in my classroom for children to work collaboratively on literacy and math projects or work individually on an academic assignment while sitting on a bean bag or a swivel chair. By transitioning the space from a traditional classroom with desks and chairs to one that is comfortable, colorful and refreshing I know my students will be motivated and excited to learn and they will be comfortable as well. Most of all I will be taking their classroom wishes and making them a reality.
