To build a strong classroom community where all students feel like they belong, students need to see themselves reflected in the stories we read. In addition to seeing themselves reflected in text, students need to read about and learn about those who are different from them. Whether we are learning remotely in the fall or back in our classroom, the books that I have chosen will give students the opportunity to engage in the relevant and important discussions around race, equity and social emotional needs we need to be having with young children right now.
