I teach kindergarten in a middle class neighborhood with kids from diverse educational backgrounds. I have students who are ready to take their previously learned skills to the next step. I have students who don't know how to spell their name yet. However, they are all excited for centers as they get used to this new routine. Our school is a large K-5 school with 750 kids, in a large district. We have an active school community including teachers and parents. Our school has a lot of pride. Students and teachers proudly wear spirit wear on Fridays while we sing our school song in the halls. My kids are getting excited each day as we "open" more centers for them to use. They are beginning to understand our routines as they learn to work cooperatively in their centers. Some of my goals for my kids each year is for them to learn with fun, help each other and to be creative. I'm hoping to create thinkers and students who will take an educational risk because it's okay to make mistakes.
