I teach third grade now, but my students' reading levels range from Kindergarten early reading to a 4th grade reading level. We have students moving in from Yemen who have had little to no literacy to students who have a lower level of academic English, to students who have more academic vocabulary and are a reading above grade level. I do not have enough books that cover this range of reading at this point. We need our readers to make huge growth! To do this, they need lots and lots of books they can read and discuss. We start to get into character development and the excitement of discovering series books. We also unpack how to read informational texts with understanding. This is the time to get them super excited about reading!
