Raising butterflies will provide lots of real-world experiences and many learning opportunities for each student. Their innate curiosity makes raising butterflies the perfect science experience for my kindergartners to do in the spring. Each student will learn a lot by raising butterflies at home since they can’t observe the transformation in the classroom. They will gain first-hand knowledge about the butterfly life cycle by observing it in real time. The students will also learn about what butterflies need to live and observe the life cycle of butterflies which will help them make personal connections to the natural world. This butterfly kit includes everything needed to raise and care for the Painted Lady butterfly culture(5 larvae with food), a butterfly habitat, and a butterfly poster(with instructions and activities) Prior to the kits arriving, we will be reading various books, viewing videos, participating in discussions, and completing activities about each stage of the lifecycle and the anatomy of the caterpillar. Parents will assist the student in setting up a safe area that will allow limitless opportunities to make observations during the 3-week transformation. Students will record their observations by drawing pictures, writing brief sentences, and/or make a video short talking about the changes observe which can be uploaded onto one of our apps for the teacher to view and give feedback. Once the butterflies emerge, students will get a chance to watch them feed on sugar water or orange slices! After a few days it will be time to release the butterflies. Students/families will gather to have a “Freedom Day for the Pollinators” when we all release our Pollinators out into the world to continue their journey to begin the life cycle again. It will be exciting for them to see the fascinating transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.
