The students attend a middle school at a Title I school in an inner city environment. They are 7th grade students that are coming in with limited knowledge of the scientific concepts dealing with Astronomy and science. Many of my students struggle in reading which makes science a difficult subject for them to comprehend. They have not been exposed to the topics covered in the curriculum and have limited support at home. The students must grasp difficult concepts in a limited amount of time. My students learn science best through the use of visuals and manipulatives. When they perform experiments and have models to make concepts tangible, learning can occur. Many of my students can then transfer the newly learned materials to answer questions they will see on standardized testing. The concepts become easier because the science occurs before them. This can then be applied to explain scientific material and demonstrate understanding.
