Flexible seating and the use of sensory materials help students to focus better on their work. My classroom is an autistic support classroom in a high poverty urban center. Many of the students in my class use sensory items such as stress balls, fidgets, or motion wands to create calm and a sense of security. My students are noticeably more engaged and less disruptive when their sensory and social-emotional needs are met. The past year has been traumatic for many students who were isolated from their peers during virtual learning. This return to the classroom will create sensory overload for some. Flexible seating and sensory materials will give them a method of dealing with stress and anxiety in a healthy manner. This year has been filled with loss and unexpected changes. It is a priority for me to create a safe space for students and to meet their social and emotional needs. Students will be able to use flexible seating during independent work time, as well as during recreation time in the classroom. Each student will have a set of sensory materials to keep in a bin to use, as needed. The flexible seating and sensory material will be set up as a "Calm Zone" in the classroom.
