Many in our school family lost everything. Working together, we can create quilts and quilted projects such as pot holders, coasters, and place mats for the neighborhood families, all while practicing critical communication, math and science skills. Insulation is a very difficult concept for fifth graders, as are area, perimeter and fractions! It is my hope that by learning simple hand quilting techniques, my students will create a fabric that can never be undone with friendship, empathy and service. Quilting has long been a community-building art; people coming together to create something beautiful from little pieces. Sewing together squares and triangles will also give the young people another creative outlet to explore. Color and color theory make options endless. Thinking of all the different possibilities makes me wish we could start today!
