My preschool students come from a variety of different neighborhoods with a number of different diagnoses. Many of them have been diagnosed with Autism and Intellectual Disability. Since their diagnoses are so significant, their lives are severely impacted by their lack of verbal communication. As a speech-language pathologist, my goal is to help them learn how to communicate their daily wants and needs without tantrums or using other physical behaviors. However, in order to learn how to communicate, we must first work on building basic vocabulary concepts. Some of my students (and families) are second language learners which makes the job even more challenging. My school is supportive of my students, but it is unable to provide adequate special education resources for my preschool classroom. The Special Day Class Teacher and I purchase materials on our own, but many of our materials are old or falling apart. The students also get bored of seeing the same materials each day.
