My class is an energetic group of first graders from a variety of ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who are eager and excited to learn to read. I have students whose reading skills range from just learning the alphabet and sounding out words to students who are reading on a second grade level. In order to successfully teach these students of such varied abilities it is essential to have a leveled reading library to meet the needs of each student. The first graders that I teach live in a school district which is overcrowded, with limited resources. They live in a state (Utah) that is consistently the lowest in per-pupil spending. However, they are the beneficiaries of countless volunteer hours, with family members who are supportive of their classroom experience. I am a first year teacher at a great elementary school where the teachers are helpful and supportive of each other. We all strive for excellence as we serve the children of the community.
