The students entering my classroom come in with a detrimental vocabulary gap compared to their peers.
Statistics show that by age 3 the "welfare" children that attend my school are already 30 million words behind than their peers from "professional" families. In addition, my classroom is comprised of students who are English Language Learners and have not yet developed a proficiency in English. I am hoping to help bridge this gap by giving the students extra exposure to literacy that they may not find at home or even in the classroom. With these tablets comes the opportunity to access thousands of books as well as programs that will read to the students. Many of the students are not able to read at home or have parents that are able to read to them. This will give the students extra exposure to what fluent adult readers sound like.
