They are students who struggle with reading traditional music notation, and have never been successful in school bands and orchestras. We adapt guitars, bass and keyboards by using a method called Figurenotes, developed at the Resonaari Music Centre in Helsinki for adults with disabilities. The instruments are cool and learning music on the adapted instruments is accessible for all. Individuals with intellectual disabilities, emotional disorders, autism, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, hearing and vision loss, are all able to participate in these accessible rock bands. Our school is a K-8 university laboratory school that has a role in training teacher education college students. Special and music education majors will teach together and learn how to include students with disabilities in instrumental music so they will be better prepared when they become professional teachers.
