My students are 90% poverty, 50% 1st generation, and a third of them move at least once during the school year. We are a glorious melting pot of hungry students that want to learn as much as they want to eat dinner. Unfortunately, their mobility has left major gaps in their education where they don't have the foundation to be as successful as they can be. As a teacher with 30 students in a class, it is very difficult to bring each student the individual foundation they need to be successful in their current unit. The students end up not even trying; they are embarrassed or have just given up. This does not reflect the passion our students have for life nor their desire to be successful at everything they try. When you get to know them, they want to be the first student in their family to graduate high school, they want to go to college, they want to run their own companies and provide for everyone in their family.
