My students need 10 Kindle Fires in order to access our online textbook programs and the online portion of our class (Canvas). Students will rotate between three of four stations each day as they experience a blended learning approach. Examples of stations include small-group explicit instruction, language and grammar practice, reading comprehension review and practice, writer's workshops, and many more. One way that the Kindle Fires will be used in some of these stations is to look up tutorial videos on diagramming sentences (like a flipped classroom). Another is to complete interactive lessons on topics such as thesis statements or types of irony. Students will have the ability to participate in online collaborative assignments and discussions, access apps to help them increase grammar knowledge, use Mastery Paths in Canvas (a program that differentiates quizzes and assignments for students based on individual needs), listen to audio books for modeled fluency and prosody, etc. Most importantly, these tablets will help me to tailor instruction for each student as I assess the results of formative assessments in each of these programs/approaches. I will be better able to provide valuable activities and lessons that propel each student forward at the most optimal rate for them. These tablets will help these eighth graders harness the power of technology so that they can harness their power of learning. Our classrooms are not equipped to handle today's technology demands, but this grant will be a big step toward preparing these students for college and career-level thinking and creation.
