I am the ESL teacher at a trauma sensitive alternative high school where I have the pleasure of working with ALL students not just those registered for my ESL classes. We are a small school with an average of about sixty students who have experienced too much trauma in their young lives. My colleagues and I consider them OUR students and we are like a big family working together to build resilience and growth mindsets. Most, if not all students are on IEPs with accommodations for behavior and/or academic special needs. Some are homeless, some are young parents, some are unaccompanied minors, some are the only "bread-winners" for their families. Our principal says that in some cases, we are "their last hope!" Our students do best when engaging with real-world, authentic activities but we need some supplies to build up our inventory of products to be sold at a local arts collective, an entrepreneurial opportunity!
