I work at a charter school in Detroit with a 97% Hispanic population. I feel like my students are at a disadvantage from the get go. Not only are they expected to learn the academic material of a first grader, most are only in their second year of learning English and are still in the process of learning a new language. Most of my students also come from underprivileged homes where learning isn't always at the top of the list. Our entire school works really hard to help our students over come these barriers. We hold parent workshops, after school clubs, as well as many after school fun activities. Everything we do is done in order to help our students reach their highest potential.
