I teach 7-12 social studies at a small, rural school. My students live in a rural county with limited access to many things most of us take for granted. Our town has a gas station, two churches, and a post office. Our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch for every student, every day. Less than half of my students have Internet access at home. Many come to school without getting adequate sleep. Approximately half of our elementary students take home food bags for the weekend. That being said, our small size is also one of our greatest advantages. I teach many of my students from 7th grade until they graduate. This gives me a unique opportunity to not only observe them grow as students but also individuals. This kind of specialized instruction allows us to help our students achieve. The past 2 graduating classes have all gone on to higher education, the military, or vocational training, many on scholarship. We are doing incredible things in our tiny school and we are proud it.
