I never imagined that one day I would want to be making screencasts from home like I was a part of the Kahn Academy! Like it or not though, that day has arrived. Today my 2012 laptop has died and I want to offer my students more than I have been able to with a laptop. As a Biology teacher of many special populations (low income, special needs, language learners), I find that any way that I can bring visuals, humor, and a sense of my own personality into the lessons the better. My students (and I) want to connect with one another, and I think the way to best do that is through screencasts. By creating my own personal screencasts on an iPad, I can engage the students by showing my face, my computer screen, and my own drawings/annotations! I can finally be the Kahn Academy I always (never) dreamed I would be! In addition to making screencasts, having an iPad would allow me to videotape myself doing lab activities, easily upload photos of experimental set ups, create sample Flipgrids, embed photos and hand drawn diagrams into slideshow presentations, easily grade their digital submissions using the CANVAS and GoogleClassroom apps... the possibilities are endless!
