How can a student concentrate on their education when they're worrying about their physiological needs? My sophomore geometry and algebra students have been doing their best to overcome poor learning conditions to learn, but they can only do so much. My students sit in an oven for over an hour. My portable classroom stands alone in the baking sun without an air conditioner, while the other portables are connected with central ac units. As this is one of the hottest classrooms in the school, students have a hard time learning. The heat affects their behavior, the drowsiness, and more. My first class does the best, as the mornings are the coolest in my classroom. Most students at WHS come from low-income backgrounds. As teachers, we are trying to overcome educational inequity despite any sociopolitical factors. As of now, the biggest and most immediate challenge for me to help my students is air conditioning.
