I teach in a small magnet high school, and the majority of my students are white. Often in situations like these, the experiences of our BIPOC students are not represented fully in the classroom. My intention is to flip this script and, in doing so, call attention and actively work to dismantle the white supremacy that is built into our systems and institutions, including our schools and classrooms. This year, I am revamping my curriculum to more specifically focus on the American experience of Black, Indigenous Origin, and People of Color (BIPOC.) My intention is to provide a space for my students to grapple with the turmoil of our world and develop a more nuanced, more empathetic understanding of one another. This semester, I will be teaching The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and I would also like to teach Just Mercy and Stamped From the Beginning, Remix as well. I’m looking for support in purchasing these titles.
