Cultural responsive teaching is critical to foster in urban students a desire and passion for learning. With the book How Tia Lola Came to (Visit) Stay, I'm recognizing students' cultural displays of learning and meaning-making. I'm also using cultural knowledge as a scaffold to connect what students know to new concepts and content in order to promote effective information processing. It's important for me to establish a social-emotional connection with my students in order to create a safe space for learning. For more information on culturally responsive teaching read Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain by Zeretta Hammond. It will transform what you know about urban education.
