I created and run a program called, "Women In Charge: Engineering Women's Lives" to increase interest in science and math careers for low and middle income female students at the school where I currently teach. It is a two-year science and math course for female seventh and eighth grade students. I designed it after noticing so many of my female students refusing to get out of their comfort zone and speak up in math and science classes. I also noticed lower science and math scores on standardized tests with our female students and I knew our high school was struggling to increase the female enrollment in their higher level physics and pre-engineering classes. After reading more about the young adolescent female I began to discover developmental experts agreed with me: Girls need encouragement to pursue math and science!
