The diverse community of young adults in my science classes is incredible: economically disadvantaged, limited English, varying reading and math ability levels, and differing cultures. According to our Ohio Department of Education Report Card, in a class of 28 students four are black, three are Hispanic, one is multicultural and 20 are white. My classes are not tracked so I have students in one classroom with reading ability that ranges from second grade to above tenth grade. Most of the students in my classes are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast. For many of these students the two meals they eat at school are the only two meals they will get in a day. Many of my students are not prepared to learn when they get to my classroom. They didn't have dinner. They didn't get enough sleep because parents were arguing. They didn't get their homework done because they were babysitting younger siblings or cousins, nieces or nephews.
