My project will bring award-winning books onto the shelves of my classroom. The current winning titles of the Newbery Medal, the Caldecott Medal, and the Coretta Scott King Book Award, along with Honor Books and many others, will give so many more diverse options for my students to choose to foster their love of reading. Having these books added to my classroom library will allow more children to see themselves represented in a story; these titles will inspire my students to take a close look at characters who have different and varying beliefs, abilities, skin colors, and cultures, so that they can more clearly recognize that no one is more important than another. Seeing each other in books will open their eyes to truths about lives they don't live which in turn results in more compassion, conversations, and change.
