Having an interactive whiteboard in the classroom could engage my students on a whole new level. Many of my students who are in 7th and 8th grade are on first and second grade reading level. I believe that having a more interactive classroom could get my students more engaged. I am not only a science teacher but a reading, writing, and math teacher as well. Even when doing hands-on science activities and experiments with inadequate materials, the students express a great passion for learning. Research shows that students are actively engaged in a lesson for about 10 minutes. This is an issue at our school since were are on block scheduling, which means the class time is 90 minutes long. This interactive whiteboard would extend my students engagement time so that they can practice to read and write while learning interesting topics in Science. For example, there are many online experiments that can be done using the interactive whiteboard. Students can create food-webs using pictures that they can drag from one spot to the next. They can become the teacher and have the other students draw what they are doing on the board. This is also a great tool for my English language learners. This could help them to express how much they understand. An example could be having a venn diagram on the board surrounded by pictures. The student could pick the picture using their hands and drag it to the correct spot. This would work very well in my classroom since my school does not have adequate supplies to complete science experiments. This is unfortunate since, students learn and understand the concepts of the activity more effectively when done in a kinesthetic way.
