My 4th Graders are very capable of achievement, but most of them don't believe this about themselves. They don't see themselves as readers. In fact, they state that they hate to read. I plan to change this attitude about reading by using novels to excite the natural reader in each of my students. The majority of my students didn't grow up reading books at home, putting them at a word deficit in the thousands when compared to their grade level peers in other areas of the city. I teach at a Title I Elementary school in a high poverty area of Austin, Texas.
