I teach at a school where money is scarce and our neighborhood feels the tightening clutches of economic hardships. A majority of our parents work and aftercare buses are consistent visitors to our campus. Having these socioeconomic factors overshadowing our neighborhood does put us at a slight disadvantage, but the evidence is hard to find on the faces of our children. My kiddos enter my class with smiles from cheek to cheek and pep in their steps. They hustle with enthusiasm and zeal hoping for a loving word and encouraging compliment from their teacher. I love my kids and cannot shower them with enough praise and encouragement during their thirty-minute P.E. class; however, I know that when they go home they may not receive the love that molds a spirit and fosters self-efficacy. I want that to continue after school hours and I want them to find opportunities that will keep them active as they leave our neighborhood campus. Partnering with parents is key.
