"Wait! Can I please have more time? I actually WANT to read this book!" Imagine my surprise when these words came from the mouth of my most reluctant reader. Sadly, I have several students in my 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts classes as well as my 7th grade MCAS Applications class that qualify as reluctant readers. While the reasons for their disenchantment with reading range-from their inability to read well, to lacking interest in the books they are reading in class, the defiance is still there. The majority of my students are on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans)or have been FLEPed (Former Limited English Proficient) from their ESL (English as a Second Language) classroom into my classroom. This transition often places the students below their peers in reading proficiency.
