I aspire to help students develop empathy that is grounded in love, hope, and commitment to a more equitable society. To do this, my sixth-grade students need access to a classroom library of relevant and engaging books that represent diverse experiences. I created this book list following guidance from the non-profit “We Need Diverse Books,” as well as popular and award-winning titles. I strive to build a classroom library where all students feel seen in a range of genres, including experiences related to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, class, etc. Many of my sixth-grade students report that my classroom library is their main resource for book access, and as a relatively new teacher, I need support in expanding the classroom library. Thank you for considering this project!
