This project will help my students learn about periodic trends through an engaging inquiry based lab. Students will be able to explore the atom by developing hypotheses and using critical thinking skills to understand just how these models came to be. In an age where information is available at the click of a button, students often forget that the information that is now available was only discovered by individuals whom put great effort in exploring the natural world. This project will help my students understand that they too have the skills to think like scientists to solve problems or develop new ways of thinking. The items for this project include several Molymod sets, and an Interactive atomic model. Students use Molymod sets to construct compounds and molecules in 3 dimensions. This allows students to understand that atoms exists in more than 2 planes. In addition, this project uses manipulatives that allow students to constructs atoms according to the Bohr model. Students are able to use the magnetized Bohr models to place protons, neutrons and electrons in order to construct a model of any given atom.
