Reading is for awesome people! This is the motto of our classroom. We are excited about reading. We want to read books that inspire us, teach us, and that we are interested in. I teach fourth grade reading at an elementary school that has departmentalized classrooms in fourth and fifth grade. The population that we serve is very transient and the students often come to us with little to no background knowledge. Their life experiences do not go outside of their own neighborhoods. Our school is an empowerment school, so this allows us to embrace teachable moments. We don't have to stick to a scripted program. We are allowed to explore topics that we love and use our power standards as a guide. The students that attend differ greatly in reading ability and don't have any experiences with reading strategies.
