In my classroom I have students reading below the seventh grade level as well as students reading on and above the 7th grade level. A large number of the students have never developed a love for reading. I am using small group instruction in my classroom this year to customize the reading instruction to the student's reading level and interests. By using graphic novels and high interest books, like Wonder, QB1, Gated, Smile, Under the Egg, and Drama, I hope to instill a love of reading in the students. I work in a rural, arts focused, middle school. In my classroom we do creative projects such as, book reports, readers theater, comic book creations, and painting pictures with words. Good literature is the base for the projects. I have found that when students can link reading to real world situations they enjoy reading more.
