Our elementary music classes are a time of creative collaboration. When students have the shared opportunity to apply their understanding of music literacy to high quality Orff instruments, they practice the lasting skills of listening, cooperating, and focusing. If our classroom can be equipped with alto and bass xylophones, our students will be able to work together to practice rhythmic and melodic ostinatos as well as improvised melodies. The physical and cognitive skills gained by learning to play the Orff instruments include self-control, right and left hand proficiency, complex listening skills, and patience. My goal is to offer every student the opportunity to create ensemble music in our classroom. By gradually adding to our supply of Orff instruments, we can bring these joyful and collaborative experiences to all the students in our music classes.
