My school is a primary school that services 875 students, Pre-K to 2nd grade. We have 100% free breakfast and lunch. The students who attend our school are high poverty with many needs. My school is amazing at trying to help each student (beyond providing the best education possible), whether it is providing clothes, extra food, or just love and attention. Most of our children are not exposed to literacy in their homes. Sometimes this is because their parents aren't literate themselves, or the importance of books falls way down the priority list. My students are 6-7 years old of African-American and Latino descent. They have a wide variety of interests! Some love sports, some love babies, and all of them love animals! A few students are on their journey to reading, but the majority are just beginning.
