I am a middle school media specialist in a high-poverty area where 100% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Students here are able to be loving and caring, however, the students I serve arrive at school each morning with things such as family issues or problems stemming in the neighborhood that a sixth, seventh or eighth grade child shouldn't be concerned about however, I observe that it weighs heavy on their mind on a daily basis. As a result, students enter the school building with negative attitudes towards peers and adults in the school. Their expression of feelings aren't typically handled in a positive manner, thus resulting in a adverse result for their actions.
These students are our future and just want to be heard and understood, knowing that they matter too. I would love for them to be able to express themselves through in an artistic way that will have positive effects for all. I am sure that I will be able to make this a reality with the start of Expressions Poetry Club.
