When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down schools across the country in March of 2020, my current second graders lost their final 9 weeks of Kindergarten. Since this pandemic has hit lower income communities and communities of color the hardest, many of my students did not get to finish their kindergarten year effectively. Despite the herculean efforts of my colleagues, technology problems and lack of access to support were detrimental to my students at that young and critical age in their learning-to-read journey. Many of them also spent either half or the whole year of first grade learning at home online with computers provided by the school. We know there is no substitute for in-person, teacher directed learning. All of our best efforts with digital at-home learning cannot replace the value of being in the classroom. Many of my students were not all able to get the full benefit of their Kindergarten and first grade teachers due to the pandemic. Out of my class of 15 students, I have 6 non-readers and 2 beginning first grade level readers. In order to present second grade content, I must read everything we do to these students. The resources I have asked for will be used in small groups and intervention times to shore up gaps in learning and improve my 8 low readers as much as I can within the time I have with them.
