My students are 8 and 9 year old third graders with a thirst for learning. Our school is in an economically disadvantaged area in Houston, Texas. Most of my students meet the low income qualifications for free or reduced lunch and are barely getting their basic needs met. Our school has reached out to the community for support and is receiving an abundance of help. Unfortunately, the help that is given is for items of necessity, (food, clothing, school supplies) and not much in the way of luxuries such as tablets and computers. Our district recently implemented a "Bring Your Own Device" program that is supposed to help teachers increase the use of technology in the classroom. These programs that are meant to help these type of students actually fail the students because the students don't have or can't afford the resources needed to succeed.
