Educators know that reading outside of the school day is essential for future academic success and maximizing the potential of our students. I have taken it upon myself to provide a classroom library with book selections reflecting the wide range of reading abilities as well as the vastly different interests of sixth graders. Creating a classroom of enthusiastic readers comes at a price. This means that I have personally purchased hundreds of dollars of quality literature, both classic and contemporary. What it also means, is that to be the most effective, these books must leave school. I have witnessed the gleam in the eyes of students when the next book in a series arrives, and the ensuing excitement of finding a novel, which that hard-to-reach kid can’t put down. This project will provide a means to increase student responsibility and minimize loss. For example, I’m currently missing one book from each of two very popular series. Several students read the missing books last year, and now only a month into school I already have disappointed kids because “their next book” is missing. A few aspiring leaders have volunteered to help organize and maintain the classroom library, and I want them to have a 21st Century experience. We will affix bar-code labels to each book. Then, using a free App and the Chromebook, we can catalogue and sort titles. Next we will establish procedures for checking out books with a hand-held scanner similar to those seen in stores. When students return a book, the App will prompt them to write a book review. The Chromebook is necessary to submit the book review, whereby the book gains “returned” status in the library. This project keeps track of books and students can read peer reviews, rather than judge books by their covers.
