For the past year, the school counseling department at WKES has been working hard on helping our students learn the important life skills that help you to deal, otherwise known as coping skills. While we have worked tirelessly to give our students these skills in our counseling offices, we would love for our students to be able to use some of their coping tools without having to walk down to our offices. Being able to provide each classroom and special area teacher a coping skills toolbox would greatly enhance our students ability to utilize coping skills in the "heat of the moment." They will have the tools to help calm them, without having to leave the classroom or wait for the counselors to be available. Each of the objects for our toolboxes were selected for specific reasons: (1) Dry Erase Pockets with markers were selected to allow students to fill out worksheets detailing their feelings and how to utilize coping skills as a way to calm down. (2) Emoji Plush Pillows keychains to use as stress balls (3) Clear plastic juice bottles to be turned into calming bottles with glittered liquid (4 & 5) Self-sealing water balloons and water beads to make sensory stress balls (6) Storage boxes to hold all supplies (7) Mini timer to be used by the student or teacher so that students are not spending valuable class time playing (8) Packs of crayons for Mindfulness coloring pages (9) Coil spring assortment to be used as a calming mechanism (10 & 11) Pocket journal and Bendy pencil for writing down thoughts and as a manipulative to calm anxious hands (12) Windmills to practice mindful breathing (13 & 14) Rubix cube and slime to focus the mind and (15) Bubbles to help with breathing.
